Too often cast simply to be peculiar, Amanda Plummer is better than that job description. We value her most in The Fisher King, where her awkwardness makes affection feel difficult, uncertain and worth the effort.

In The Fisher King (1991), Amanda Plummer lets Lydia be awkward without insisting that we find her adorable. Affection takes effort here, and the performance gives that effort its proper weight. We were moved by her hesitancy, because Plummer makes the difficulty of getting close to someone matter. Terry Gilliam's fairytale can become too pleased with its diversions, but she helps keep the romance believable. Alongside Mercedes Ruehl, whose Anne has a welcome directness, she gives it feelings that cannot simply be hurried along by the film.
Her career began on stage in the late 1970s, with a film debut in Cattle Annie and Little Britches (1981) followed by supporting parts through the 1980s. The Fisher King and Pulp Fiction (1994) brought wider recognition. Her quavering voice and physical intensity make her well suited to characters who seem vulnerable or unpredictable. She has often been cast as the eccentric rather than the conventional lead. The limitation is that a part can ask her to be odd and consider its work done.
In Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Honey Bunny gives her a different job in the opening sequence: make an immediate impression. Her high energy suits a film that is loud and pleased with itself, and the contribution is memorable without being the reason we recommend the film. We would hesitate, though, to treat it as the complete account of what she can do. Lydia's hesitant affection interests us more, especially when Plummer resists the surrounding film's eagerness to make romance seem easy.
Supporting work has remained the pattern, including Wiress in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) and television appearances in Ratched (2020) and Star Trek: Picard (2023). The reservation is about the opportunities as much as the acting: the invitation to be peculiar can leave little room for anything else. We do not need every performance to be quieter, but we do want the character to have more to do than advertise her strangeness. Start with The Fisher King for a part that does.
Biography
Amanda Plummer is an American actress. Born on 23 March 1957 in New York City, she is the daughter of actors Tammy Grimes and Christopher Plummer. She attended Middlebury College and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
Plummer began her career on stage. She made her Broadway debut as Josephine in the 1981 revival of A Taste of Honey, earning a Tony Award nomination. In 1982 she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role as Sister Agnes in Agnes of God.
She is known for her film roles including Lydia in The Fisher King (1991) and Honey Bunny in Pulp Fiction (1994). Other credits include Wiress in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) and Captain Vadic in Star Trek: Picard (2020).
