Watch Anamaria Marinca keep a conversation going in 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007). As Otilia, she has to ask for help, and Marinca makes us see how carefully the request must be made. Nothing about her resourcefulness suggests that she expects things to turn out well. We were frightened by the effort in those exchanges, because she makes even an ordinary reply feel like something she cannot afford to get wrong. She holds our attention through the thinking as much as through whatever she decides to say.
That performance was her feature-film debut, following her television breakthrough in Sex Traffic (2004). Her subsequent work has taken her through Romanian and European independent cinema, international features and television. The science fiction of Europa Report (2013) sits alongside the war film Fury (2014) and the horror-drama You Won’t Be Alone (2022). Across such changes of setting, she is repeatedly cast as resourceful women facing a crisis. What makes that casting interesting is how little she needs to announce their intelligence.
Her particular skill with long takes and sparse dialogue suits this sort of drama. Even when Otilia has little freedom to act, Marinca gives us something to watch in the effort of deciding how to proceed. She must make the character capable without making her difficulties look manageable, and she does it by refusing an easy show of confidence. Helping a friend takes concentration, and Marinca lets us see how much. It is enough to keep us watching for the next practical task, however small.
Our reservation about 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is how insistently Mungiu keeps the pressure on. His prolonged attention to distress sometimes feels excessive, and the film gives us few chances to relax. Yet Marinca keeps Otilia’s immediate needs clear enough that the severity does not become the only thing we notice. We would welcome more leading parts that let her show such close attention to other people without quite so much suffering. Start with this performance; just do not expect a restful evening.
Biography
Anamaria Marinca is a Romanian actress. She was born on 1 April 1978 in Iași and graduated from the University of Fine Arts, Music and Drama "George Enescu" in Iași.
Marinca made her screen debut in the 2004 television film Sex Traffic, for which she won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress. She is also known for her role as Otilia in 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007).
Her other film credits include Europa Report (2013), Fury (2014), Ghost in the Shell (2017) and The Old Guard (2020). She has appeared in television series including Doctor Who and Invasion.
