Biography
André S. Labarthe (also credited as André Sylvain Labarthe) was a French actor, director, producer and critic. Born on 18 December 1931 in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, he died on 5 March 2018 in Paris.
He began as a critic for Cahiers du cinéma in the 1950s. Labarthe appeared as Paul in Jean-Luc Godard’s Vivre sa vie (1962) and later acted in Jacques Rivette’s L’Amour fou (1969).
In 1964, with Janine Bazin, he created the long-running television documentary series Cinéastes de notre temps (later revived as Cinéma, de notre temps), in which filmmakers profiled their peers. He directed many episodes himself and produced dozens more until the 2010s.
