Andrew W. Marlowe writes crime television in which the company matters more than the case. We like his ear for mismatched partners, particularly in Castle, though the charm cannot always excuse the plotting.

In Castle (2009), a mystery writer gets to enjoy an investigation while the police officer beside him has to make it stand up. Andrew W. Marlowe lets that difference occupy as much of the programme as the business of finding a culprit. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic make the partnership agreeable even when the next development is easy to guess. We warmed to them because the friction between enjoying a puzzle and doing a job gives their exchanges a purpose beyond passing on clues. The cases are not consistently strong enough to hold us on their own.
Before that partnership, Marlowe's feature screenplays included Air Force One (1997) and Hollow Man (2000). Television gave him longer to develop his characters: he created Castle and ran its first seven seasons. His interest in eccentric investigators and a lighter tone draws on programmes including Columbo and Moonlighting. Those influences help explain why personal stories and the weekly investigation are allowed comparable attention, with room for humour and attraction alongside the detective work.
On Castle, he tailored the irreverent humour to Fillion's strengths. That is a practical skill, and it helps explain why a familiar pairing remains watchable. The literary references and excursions into subcultures give the mysteries some variety, though that does not help when the plotting strains belief. We recommend the series with that reservation: the characters can keep us interested through a predictable case, but they cannot make a weak explanation convincing.
With Terri Edda Miller, he co-created Take Two (2018), another variation on the character-led crime formula; his later credits include developing and writing The Equalizer (2021). The resemblance between Take Two and Castle suggests how readily a useful approach can become a habit. The weakness we would want him to address is already apparent in Castle, where the partnership sometimes has to compensate for the investigation. Start there if spending time with Fillion and Katic sounds more appealing than checking whether the detective work survives scrutiny.
Biography
Andrew W. Marlowe is an American screenwriter, producer and showrunner. He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English literature and obtained an MFA in screenwriting from the University of Southern California. In 1992 he won a Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for his script The Lehigh Pirates.
Marlowe wrote the screenplays for the films Air Force One (1997), End of Days (1999) and Hollow Man (2000). He created the ABC series Castle (2009–2016), on which he also served as writer and executive producer, and later created Take Two (2018). He has been married to screenwriter Terri Edda Miller since 1997; the couple collaborated on Castle through their production company MilMar Pictures.
