Biography
Angela Davis is an American political activist, academic and author who has appeared as herself in several documentary films. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she studied at Brandeis University and later at universities in Germany before becoming a lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles.
She rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s through her involvement with the Communist Party USA and associations with the Black Panther Party, later focusing on prison abolition and co-founding Critical Resistance. Davis has served as a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies departments.
Her film appearances include 13th (2016), directed by Ava DuVernay, in which she discusses the prison-industrial complex, as well as The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006) and The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (2011).
