Biography
Angelo Francesco Lavagnino (also credited as A.F. Lavagnino and Angelo Lavagnino) was an Italian composer of film scores. Born in Genoa on 22 February 1909, he studied violin and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, graduating in 1932. He later taught film music at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena from 1948 to 1963.
Lavagnino began composing for cinema in the early 1950s and scored hundreds of films across genres, including documentaries, peplums and spaghetti westerns. He is noted for his scores for Orson Welles’s Othello (1951) and Chimes at Midnight (1965), as well as The Merchant of Venice (1969), Legend of the Lost (1957), Gorgo (1961) and Everybody Go Home! (1960). He won the Nastro d’Argento for best score twice, for Continente perduto (1955) and Vertigine bianca (1956). Lavagnino died in Gavi on 21 August 1987.
