Annabelle Wallis is convincing when frightened people have to keep functioning. We rate that steadiness, particularly in horror, but Mutiny leaves us wishing the writing gave her as much to do between confrontations.

In Mutiny (2026), Annabelle Wallis has to hold our attention while the film waits for its next fight. As Angie Ellis, she gets too little help from Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis’s screenplay. We were frustrated by the conversations because the writing gave us so little reason to care which way they went. She is doing a job the thriller needs done, with few opportunities to make the character matter. We rate her more highly than this part allows.
The earlier television roles help explain why she keeps being cast as capable women in dangerous surroundings. The Tudors (2009) brought her breakthrough as Jane Seymour; Peaky Blinders (2013–2019) brought wider notice as Grace Burgess. Intelligence and resilience recur in her casting, and horror has proved a useful home for both. In Annabelle (2014), as Mia Form, her strength is making the person facing the supernatural threat feel recognisable.
The move into studio blockbusters included The Mummy (2017), playing Dr Jenny Halsey opposite Tom Cruise and undertaking demanding stunt work. That physical commitment is worth acknowledging even when a film offers less than its leading actors need. The Loudest Voice (2019) offers another useful measure of her acting, with her portrayal of suppressed trauma. James Wan’s Malignant (2021) put her back at the centre of a horror film as Madison Mitchell. We would like more work that asks for emotional depth alongside her ability to make danger convincing.
The reservation is clearest in Jean-François Richet’s Mutiny, where Jason Statham’s cramped fights are the reason to persevere. Wallis is not the only actor short of material: Roland Møller’s Captain Marko Madsen has the same problem. A more assertive performance would not necessarily improve scenes that have so little to offer either character. This is a serviceable action thriller, but a limited introduction to Wallis. We would welcome a thriller that lets her be as interesting in conversation as she is convincing under threat.

Annabelle Wallis is an English actress. Born in Oxford in 1984, she spent much of her childhood in Portugal before moving to London, where she attended drama school.
She is known for her television roles as Jane Seymour in The Tudors (2009–2010) and Grace Burgess in Peaky Blinders (2013–2019). Her film credits include X-Men: First Class (2011), Annabelle (2014), The Mummy (2017), Tag (2018), Malignant (2021) and Mutiny (2026), in which she plays Angie Ellis.
Wallis is a great-niece of the actor Richard Harris.
