Biography

Antoinette Messam is a costume designer whose credits include Creed (2015), The Harder They Fall (2021), The Book of Clarence (2023), Lift (2024) and The Bluff (2026). Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, she moved to Toronto at the age of seven and grew up in a family of craftspeople; her mother was a dressmaker and her grandfather a tailor.

She began her career in fashion as a model and stylist before working as a buyer on television productions and moving into costume design. Messam is recognised as the first Black Canadian costume designer. Her other film work includes Orphan (2009), SuperFly (2018), Hold the Dark (2018) and Secret Headquarters (2022). She has received four wins and four nominations for her contributions.
