Biography
Antonio Pietrangeli (19 January 1919 – 12 July 1968) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. He began his career writing film criticism for magazines including Bianco e Nero and Cinema, and contributed to screenplays for Luchino Visconti's Ossessione (1943) and La Terra Trema (1949), Roberto Rossellini's Europa '51 (1952), and other films.
Pietrangeli made his directorial debut with Il sole negli occhi (Empty Eyes, 1953). His subsequent work includes the comedies Lo scapolo (The Bachelor, 1956) and Souvenir d'Italia (It Happened in Rome, 1957), Adua e le compagne (Adua and Her Friends, 1960), Fantasmi a Roma (Ghosts of Rome, 1961), Il magnifico cornuto (The Magnificent Cuckold, 1964), and Io la conoscevo bene (I Knew Her Well, 1965). He received the Nastro d'Argento for Best Director for the last of these.
Pietrangeli died in an accident while filming Come, quando, perché (How, When and with Whom), which was completed by Valerio Zurlini.
