Anushka Shetty brings firmness and warmth to warrior roles that could easily settle for looking formidable. We rate her for the way she makes affection part of the action, especially when a co-star can match her conviction.

In Bāhubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), Prabhas's Bāhubali guides Anushka Shetty's Devasena through firing three arrows at once. It could be another occasion for the hero to demonstrate how much more he can do than everyone else. Shetty makes it feel like a shared accomplishment, with pleasure in the other person's skill. We were unexpectedly moved because the care between them was expressed through the action. She holds her own beside him without turning the exchange into a contest, and that makes the affection easier to believe.
Her breakthrough came with the dual lead role in the fantasy Arundhati (2009). The following year's anthology drama Vedam (2010) gave her Saroja, a sex worker, a less grand character than the queens and warriors with whom she is often associated. Rudhramadevi (2015) cast her as a historical queen, while Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) introduced Devasena. These parts help explain her reputation for strength, but the archery scene is a better guide to why we enjoy watching her.
S. S. Rajamouli, who had already worked with her on Vikramarkudu (2006), gives her plenty to do in Bāhubali 2, though his screenplay does not always know when to stop. Once a feeling is clear, it is liable to explain it again. The ease between Shetty and Prabhas helps sustain the film through its longer stretches, but it also makes that repetition less necessary. We would not ask either actor to be restrained simply because the feats are impossible. Their conviction is a large part of the pleasure.
Her film appearances became less frequent after the Baahubali films, with Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty (2023) among her selective returns. There she plays the contemporary, independent Anvitha Ravali Shetty, away from historical queens. We would welcome more contemporary roles, provided they give her as much to do as Devasena. Start with Bāhubali 2: The Conclusion, and make an allowance for its length.
Biography
Anushka Shetty is an Indian actress who works primarily in Telugu and Tamil cinema. She made her film debut in the 2005 Telugu film Super and gained wider recognition with her role in Vikramarkudu (2006).
She received critical acclaim for her performances in Arundhati (2009) and Vedam (2010). She is known for portraying Devasena in Bāhubali: The Beginning (2015) and Bāhubali 2: The Conclusion (2017).
Born Sweety Shetty on 7 November 1981 in Mangalore, Karnataka, she trained as a yoga instructor before entering the film industry.
