Biography
Arnold Schulman (11 August 1925 – 4 February 2023) was an American playwright, screenwriter, producer, songwriter and novelist. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he attended the University of North Carolina, served in the US Navy during the Second World War, and moved to New York in 1946. There he studied playwriting with Robert Anderson at the American Theatre Wing and began writing for television in the early 1950s before transitioning to feature films in 1957.
His screen credits include Wild Is the Wind (1957), A Hole in the Head (1959, adapted from his own play), Cimarron (1960), Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), Goodbye, Columbus (1969), Funny Lady (1975), A Chorus Line (1985) and Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988). He also wrote the teleplay for And the Band Played On (1993). Schulman received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay for Love with the Proper Stranger and Best Adapted Screenplay for Goodbye, Columbus, as well as a Humanitas Prize for And the Band Played On.
