Arthur Agee’s natural presence in Hoop Dreams makes us care about far more than his chances on a basketball court. It is the film to seek him out in, with his small acting roles a less substantial basis for judgement.

There is schoolwork to be done in Hoop Dreams (1994), whatever Arthur Agee might hope to achieve on the basketball court. Alongside William Gates, he is a Chicago teenager whose sporting ambitions must compete with financial pressures and ordinary obligations. Director Steve James keeps those demands visible, rather than reducing him to a promising player awaiting a verdict. We care about his chances, but we also begin to care about what it costs to keep pursuing them.
We were moved by Hoop Dreams because James gives Agee’s school and financial pressures the attention another film might reserve for a game. Agee’s natural ease before the camera helps, although calling it a performance would give the wrong impression of what we are watching. James allows both boys to matter without requiring either to become an example, and his patience gives us time to take an interest in their lives beyond basketball. The film asks for 174 minutes, and we would not shorten the time spent away from the court.
The move into fiction brought Agee back to James for the television film Passing Glory (1999), in which he played Ice Gainsworth. He appeared as himself again in the documentary Hoop Reality (2007). Win It All (2017) gave him a part named Arthur. Those small acting roles sit beside a documentary presence that remains the clearest reason for our interest. Agee’s own description of what Hoop Dreams did for him is useful here: “The film turned out to be my NBA.”
That is also the limit of what we would claim for him as an actor. A fictional role cannot be judged by how much we cared about the person in a documentary, and we would not recommend those films merely for his name in the credits. For Agee, begin with Hoop Dreams and give it the full evening. An interest in basketball is optional.

Arthur Agee (born 22 October 1972) is an American actor and former basketball player from Chicago, Illinois. He is one of two subjects of the 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams, which follows his high school basketball career and aspirations.
Agee has appeared in several acting roles, including as Arthur in the 2017 film Win It All and as Teammate #3 in a 1996 episode of the television series Early Edition. He has also featured in Passing Glory (1999) and other projects. Beyond acting, he has worked as a motivational speaker, launched a Hoop Dreams clothing line, and co-hosts a podcast with his documentary co-subject William Gates.
