Biography

Arthur Brough (born Frederick Arthur Baker) was a British actor and theatre founder, producer and director. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1928, and began his career in repertory theatre. In 1929 he married actress Elizabeth Addeyman; together they established the Arthur Brough Players, a repertory company based at the Leas Pavilion in Folkestone, Kent, and later formed companies in several other towns.

Brough appeared in guest roles on television series including Dad's Army (1968) and The Persuaders! (1971). He is best known for playing senior menswear salesman Ernest Grainger in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, beginning with the 1972 pilot and continuing through the first five series until 1977. He died in Folkestone on 28 May 1978, six weeks after his wife.
