Biography
Arthur Wontner (21 January 1875 – 10 July 1960) was a British actor. He appeared on stage from 1897 and in films from 1915, playing a wide range of roles.
He is best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes in five films between 1931 and 1937: The Sleeping Cardinal, The Missing Rembrandt, The Sign of Four, The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes and Silver Blaze (also known as Murder at the Baskervilles). He also appeared as Embassy Counsellor in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) and as an old gentleman in Genevieve (1953).
Wontner's son was Sir Hugh Wontner, a hotelier and Lord Mayor of London.
