Biography
Ary Barroso was a Brazilian composer, pianist, actor and radio presenter. He was born on 7 November 1903 in Ubá, Minas Gerais, and died on 9 February 1964 in Rio de Janeiro.
Barroso composed many popular sambas in the first half of the twentieth century, including "Aquarela do Brasil" (1939), which became widely known in English as "Brazil". His songs featured in films such as Saludos Amigos (1942) and were recorded by Carmen Miranda. He received an Academy Award nomination for the song "Rio de Janeiro" from the 1944 film Brazil.
He appeared as an actor in Brazilian films including Alô, Alô, Brasil (1935), João Ninguém (1936) and Joujoux e Balangandãs (1939). His compositions continued to be used in later films such as the 1985 Brazil.
