Biography
Augustus Goetz was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Buffalo, New York, on 3 October 1897, he died in New York City on 30 September 1957. He collaborated throughout his career with his wife, Ruth Goetz (née Goodman), whom he married in 1932. They wrote plays and screenplays together for more than twenty-five years.
Their best-known work was the play The Heiress (1947), an adaptation of Henry James's novel Washington Square, which they also adapted for the 1949 film directed by William Wyler. Other credits include the screenplay for Carrie (1952) and the plays The Immoralist (1954) and The Hidden River (1957). Goetz attended the University of Pennsylvania and had earlier worked in finance before turning to writing.
