Biography
Barbara Bryne was a British-American actress of stage, film and television. Born in London, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before emigrating to Canada in the early 1960s. She became a frequent performer at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival from 1966 and maintained a long association with the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
On Broadway she originated the roles of the Old Lady in Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George (1984) and Jack's Mother in Into the Woods (1987). Her film credits include Amadeus (1984) as Frau Weber, The Bostonians (1984) as Mrs. Tarrant, and Two Evil Eyes (1990). She also appeared in the television adaptation of Into the Woods (1991). Bryne died in Minneapolis on 2 May 2023.
