Biography

Bart Layton is an English filmmaker, director and screenwriter. He was born in 1975 in Hammersmith, London.

Layton began his career in documentary filmmaking. He wrote and directed The Imposter (2012), a true-crime film about identity deception, and American Animals (2018), a hybrid documentary and narrative feature about a real book heist. He has served as creative director of the British production company RAW.

Layton wrote and directed the 2026 crime thriller Crime 101, an adaptation of a Don Winslow novella starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry.
