Ben Whitehead keeps Wallace's familiar voice warm and companionable. We value how naturally he fits beside Gromit, though the dog's silent reactions tell us more about their friendship than anything Wallace says.
Fi1m perspective
The stretched vowels and nasal tone make Wallace recognisable before he has said much. In Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024), Ben Whitehead makes that familiar delivery feel comfortably lived in. We rate his performance for its warmth and for how well it works alongside the animation. Gromit's face gives us the patience, affection and annoyance that explain the friendship. Whitehead fits beside those expressions without making the voice something we are constantly invited to notice.
That comfort has a long preparation behind it. Whitehead was a read-in artist and Wallace understudy on Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), where he also voiced Mr Leaching. The game series Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures (2009) gave him a substantial outing as Wallace before Vengeance Most Fowl became his first lead feature in the role. The move from supporting the performance to carrying it helps explain why his work feels so settled: he has had time to learn what needs preserving.
Taking over from Peter Sallis invites scrutiny of every sound, and Whitehead has chosen continuity over reinvention. The risk is that such careful matching might leave us admiring an impersonation while feeling little for Wallace himself. We were touched by the friendship in Vengeance Most Fowl because Whitehead's warmth sits alongside a Gromit who is allowed to look thoroughly fed up. Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham keep returning to the pair, and the irritation makes their affection easier to believe.
The silent characters still do the finest work in that film, and we would not claim otherwise on Whitehead's behalf. His performance cannot rescue the police detours when they slow things down. Nor does success as Wallace tell us how he would handle a substantially different leading part. But keeping this particular character warm and credible is substantial work, even if its success makes the actor's contribution easy to overlook. Start with Vengeance Most Fowl, and give Gromit equal attention.
