Biography
Bernard Bresslaw (1934–1993) was an English actor and comedian. Born in Stepney, London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on a London County Council scholarship and won the Emile Littler Award as most promising actor. He began his career in radio and television, notably as Pte 'Popeye' Popplewell in The Army Game (1957–61), before appearing in numerous films and stage productions.
Bresslaw is best known for his roles in 14 Carry On films, including Carry On Cowboy (1965), Carry On Screaming! (1966), Carry On Up the Khyber (1968), Carry On Camping (1969) and Carry On Doctor (1967). He also played Varga in the Doctor Who serial The Ice Warriors (1967) and the Cyclops in Krull (1983). He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and appeared in other films such as Jabberwocky (1977). Bresslaw died of a heart attack in Regent's Park, London, shortly before a stage performance.
