Biography
Bernie West (born Bernard Wessler) was an American television writer and producer. Born on 30 May 1918 in the Bronx, New York, he graduated from Baruch College and began his career as a nightclub comedian and stage actor, appearing in the Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing (1956) and its 1960 film adaptation.
West and his writing partner Michael Ross joined the staff of All in the Family in 1971 after submitting a script. They wrote numerous episodes, served as story editors and producers, and shared a 1973 Emmy Award for the episode "The Bunkers and the Swingers". With Ross and Don Nicholl, West created and produced the spin-off The Jeffersons (1975) and developed and produced Three's Company (1977). He also worked on The Ropers and Three's a Crowd.
West died on 29 July 2010 in Beverly Hills, California, aged 92.
