Bertil Guve lets Alexander Ekdahl be difficult without making his fear any less real. His performance in Fanny and Alexander is worth seeking out for that awkwardness, and for how much his eyes can tell us.

Bertil Guve’s eyes do much of the work in Fanny and Alexander (1982). His Alexander Ekdahl seems to be watching the adults and deciding how much of what they say he is prepared to accept. The imagination and melancholy are there, but so is an awkwardness that prevents him from becoming a child whose only purpose is to earn our sympathy. We were moved by his stubbornness, because Guve allows a threatened boy to remain difficult when it would be simpler to make him sweet.
There was little time for this to become an established screen manner. Ingmar Bergman cast Guve after a small, uncredited part in a 1981 television film directed by Lasse Hallström. Fanny and Alexander gave him the lead child role, and Bergman used him again as the younger Henrik Vogler in After the Rehearsal (1984). That brief flashback appearance was his final acting credit; he left acting as a teenager.
Bergman’s useful decision is to let fantasy belong to the children’s experience. Guve’s expressive eyes suit that approach: we can see both imagination and melancholy without needing every thought explained. Alexander’s freedom to imagine matters because the adults insist on their own account of what is true. Guve makes the resistance feel personal, keeping the boy’s awkwardness even when our sympathy is assured. It is sensitive acting that does not ask the character to behave sensitively at every moment.
The film gives us a reason to qualify that praise: Pernilla Allwin’s Fanny deserves more of the attention Alexander receives. Guve is persuasive enough to make the imbalance easy to overlook, but we still wanted Bergman to spend more time with her. It is a fault in a family drama we otherwise recommend warmly, and no fault of the boy asked to carry so much of it. Start with Fanny and Alexander, and do not expect Guve to be endearing just to please us.
Biography
Bertil Guve is a Swedish civil engineer and former child actor. Born on 9 September 1970 in Stockholm, he is also credited as Bertil Gonzalez-Guve or José Bertil Gonzalez Guve.
He is known for his role as Alexander Ekdahl in Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander (1982) and its 1983 television miniseries version, as well as the younger Henrik Vogler in After the Rehearsal (1984). He had an earlier uncredited role in Lasse Hallström's television film Kom igen nu'rå! (1981).
Guve later trained as a civil engineer and earned a PhD in industrial economics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He has worked as a researcher and in leadership roles at KTH, including positions bridging technology, health and industry.
