Biography
Birgit Missal is a German costume designer. Born on 20 June 1963, she studied costume design at the HAW Hamburg and fashion design at the Hamburger Modeakademie JAK, following an internship at NDR. From the late 1980s she worked consistently in film and television costume, with an early and sustained collaboration with director Hark Bohm on titles including Yasemin (1988), Herzlich willkommen (1990) and Für immer und immer (1997).
She is known for her work on the feature film Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (2008), for which she received a nomination for the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Costume Design in 2009. Other credits include Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (2003), Zeiten ändern Dich (2010), the television miniseries Krupp – Eine deutsche Familie (2009) and the feature Amrum (2025). For many years she served as head of costume on the long-running ARD series Rote Rosen.
