Biography
Bob Ellison was an American television writer, producer and script consultant. He wrote 15 episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and served as executive story editor during its final two seasons (1975–77). He shared a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for the series finale, “The Last Show”.
Ellison began his career writing variety specials featuring performers including Julie Andrews and Burt Bacharach. He co-developed the NBC sitcom Dear John (1988–92), starring Judd Hirsch, and worked as a creative or script consultant on series including Cheers, Wings and Becker. He received a second Primetime Emmy for his variety writing.
Born Robert James Ellison in New York City on 25 February 1933, he died in Los Angeles on 8 April 2024, aged 91. He was married to Elaine Rubenstein.
