Biography
Bruce McCandless II was an American NASA astronaut, naval officer and aviator. Selected as an astronaut in 1966, he served as capsule communicator (CAPCOM) for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, including during the first lunar EVA.
He flew on two Space Shuttle missions: STS-41-B in 1984, during which he performed the first untethered spacewalk, and STS-31 in 1990. McCandless appeared in archive footage as himself in the 2019 documentary Apollo 11.
