Biography
Bryan Forbes (born John Theobald Clarke) was an English film director, screenwriter, producer, actor and novelist. He trained briefly at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and served in the Intelligence Corps during the Second World War. He began his career as a supporting actor in British films before turning to screenwriting in the 1950s.
Forbes made his directorial debut with Whistle Down the Wind (1961). He also directed Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), King Rat (1965), The Stepford Wives (1975) and The Slipper and the Rose (1976). His screenplays include The League of Gentlemen (1960) and The Angry Silence (1960). He appeared as Cohn in The Guns of Navarone (1961) and wrote and directed an episode of the series Play for Today (1980). He was married to the actress Nanette Newman and was appointed CBE in 2004.
