Biography
C. Robert Cargill is an American screenwriter, novelist and former film critic. Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1975, he began his career writing film reviews for websites including Ain’t It Cool News under the pseudonym Massawyrm before moving into screenwriting.
He is a frequent collaborator with director Scott Derrickson. Their joint credits include the screenplays for Sinister (2012), Sinister 2 (2015), Doctor Strange (2016) and The Black Phone (2021). Cargill also wrote the screenplay for No Man of God (2021) and contributed to V/H/S/85 (2023). He served as writer and producer on the sequel Black Phone 2 (2025).
Cargill is the co-founder of the production company Crooked Highway and has written several novels, including the Dreams and Shadows series and Sea of Rust.
