Cameron Boyce was a dancer who acted, and it showed in the best way: loose, quick and funny in Descendants (2015) without pushing for the laugh, the one in a Disney ensemble who never looked as though he was working. The films were thinner than he was.

In Descendants (2015), Carlos de Vil is the son of Cruella, and his mother has raised him to be afraid of dogs. It is a one-line joke, and in most hands it would stay one. Cameron Boyce plays Carlos loose and funny, and he moves like the dancer he was, so the fear reads as something in the body rather than a line the writers gave him. In a cast that is working hard to sell every beat, he is the one who looks as if he is enjoying himself, and it is catching.
He had been at it since he was small. There were child parts in Mirrors and Eagle Eye (both 2008), then Grown Ups (2010) opposite Adam Sandler and its sequel in 2013, where his timing was already good enough to hold his own in a room full of comics. The part that made him was Luke Ross in Jessie (2011–2015), which Disney rewrote for him after his audition and which ran for four seasons and 98 episodes. Descendants followed, three television films for Kenny Ortega between 2015 and 2019, alongside Gamer's Guide to Pretty Much Everything (2015–2017) and voice work as Jake in Jake and the Never Land Pirates.
What he did well was underplay. He had trained in breakdancing, hip-hop, tap and ballet from pre-school, and it gave him an ease on screen that the writing around him rarely deserved; when Ortega fills the frame with bodies for "Rotten to the Core", Boyce is the one you follow because he is not straining. We gave Descendants a 60 and stand by it: the songs catch and the script is thin. But we came out remembering him more than the plot, and a little annoyed on his behalf, because he was plainly capable of more than the film asked.
That is the reservation, and it is about the material rather than the man. Almost everything he made stayed inside family programming, and he knew it: "I don’t ever want to limit myself to a certain type of character/genre," he said in 2019. The move out had begun. He played Zach in the miniseries Mrs. Fletcher (2019) and Cal, a troubled boy in a drama about bullying, in Runt (2020), and appeared in Paradise City (2021). We have not reviewed them and will not pretend to a verdict.
So the record is a comic dancer in bright, thin films, doing more with the parts than they needed, with the serious work just starting. Watch Descendants for the opening number and for him; the rest of the case rests on three films made when he had only just begun to be given something to do.
Biography
Cameron Boyce (also credited as Cameron Mica Boyce) was an American actor. He began his career as a child actor with roles in the films Mirrors (2008) and Eagle Eye (2008), followed by appearances in Grown Ups (2010) and its 2013 sequel.
Boyce gained prominence for his starring role as Luke Ross in the Disney Channel series Jessie (2011–2015) and as Carlos de Vil in the Descendants television films (2015, 2017 and 2019). He died in Los Angeles on 6 July 2019, aged 20, from a seizure resulting from epilepsy.
