Biography
Carl Esmond was an Austrian-born actor, credited in English-language productions as Carl Esmond and also known as Willy Eichberger. Born Carl Cäsar Willy Simon in Vienna on 14 June 1902, he trained at the State Academy of Dramatic Arts in Vienna and made his film debut in the 1933 German operetta Kaiserwalzer (The Emperor's Waltz). He worked in German and Austrian cinema before emigrating to the United States in the late 1930s.
In Hollywood he appeared in films including Sergeant York (1941), Ministry of Fear (1944), The World in His Arms (1952) and Morituri (1965). He played the Doctor in Max Ophüls's Lola Montès (1955), billed as Willy Eichberger. Esmond also had roles in television series such as Maverick (1957) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964), and his final screen work was in the 1985 television film My Wicked, Wicked Ways: The Legend of Errol Flynn. He died in Brentwood, California, on 4 December 2004.
