Biography
Carl Kleinschmitt was an American television writer and producer. Born in Los Angeles on 28 August 1937, he began his career in the mid-1960s, writing for The Joey Bishop Show after meeting future producer Garry Marshall.
He wrote nine episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show (1965–1966), often with partner Dale McRaven, and two episodes of MASH (1973), including “Sometimes You Hear the Bullet,” for which he received a Writers Guild of America nomination. His other credits include episodes of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., The Doris Day Show, Welcome Back, Kotter and The Love Boat. He created the sitcoms Funny Face (later retitled The Sandy Duncan Show) and the HBO series 1st & Ten* (1984–1990).
Kleinschmitt also wrote the screenplay for the feature Middle Age Crazy (1980). He died in Los Angeles on 8 December 2022.
