Biography
Carl Lerner was an American film editor, director and educator. Born in Philadelphia on 17 June 1912, he began in theatre before moving into film editing as an apprentice at Columbia Pictures in the late 1940s. He worked as an assistant editor on films including The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Red River (1948).
His editing credits include Cry Murder (1950), Patterns (1956), 12 Angry Men (1957), The Fugitive Kind (1960), Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962), The Swimmer (1968), The Boys in the Band (1970) and Klute (1971). He also directed the feature Black Like Me (1964) and the short documentary American Homes (1949). Lerner taught film technique at City College, New York University and the School of Visual Arts. He died in New York City on 26 August 1973.
