Biography

Carlos Arruza (born Carlos Ruiz Camino) was a Mexican bullfighter and actor. Born on 17 February 1920 in Mexico City, he began fighting bulls professionally at the age of 14 and became one of the leading matadors of the 1940s, competing with Manolete in Spain.

He appeared in several films, including the Mexican bullfighting dramas Mi reino por un torero (1944) and Sangre torera (1950). His final screen role was as Lt. Reyes in the 1960 John Wayne film The Alamo. Arruza died on 20 May 1966 in a car accident near Toluca, Mexico. He was the subject of the 1971 documentary Arruza, directed by Budd Boetticher.
