Biography
Carole Shelley (16 August 1939 – 31 August 2018) was an English actress who worked extensively in the United States and the United Kingdom. She was born in London and became a naturalised US citizen.
She originated the role of Gwendolyn Pigeon in the 1965 Broadway production of The Odd Couple, reprising it in the 1968 film and early episodes of the television series. Other stage work included originating Madame Morrible in Wicked and a Tony Award-winning performance as Mrs Kendal in The Elephant Man (1979). She received further Tony nominations for Absurd Person Singular (1975), Stepping Out (1987) and Billy Elliot the Musical (2009).
Shelley provided voices for several Disney animated films, including Amelia Gabble in The Aristocats (1970) and Lady Kluck in Robin Hood (1973). Her other screen credits include appearances in Quiz Show (1994), Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), Bewitched (2005) and episodes of Frasier and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
