Biography
Charles Bates, also credited as James Charles Bates, was an American child actor. He is known for his role as Roger Newton in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943). He appeared in numerous films between the early 1940s and 1952, often in small or uncredited parts, including I Married a Witch (1942), Son of Dracula (1943), Pursued (1947), Shockproof (1949) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952).
After retiring from acting, Bates studied electrical engineering and worked for the State of California, retiring in 1996 as a senior electrical engineer. He lived in the Pacific Northwest in later life and died in Spokane, Washington, in May 2023.
