Biography

Charles Mendl was a British diplomat and actor. Born in London in 1871, he was educated at Harrow School and later worked in business and intelligence before a long career as press attaché at the British Embassy in Paris, for which he was knighted in 1924.

In later life he appeared in two films. He played the Commodore in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious (1946) and had an uncredited role as Sir Charles Gage in Ivy (1947). He also hosted the television programme The Sir Charles Mendl Show in 1947.

Mendl was married first to interior designer Elsie de Wolfe from 1926 until her death in 1950, and then to Yvonne Steinbach from 1951 until 1956. He died in Paris in 1958.
