Biography
Charles Strouse was an American composer and lyricist. He was born in New York City on 7 June 1928 and died there on 15 May 2025.
Strouse studied at the Eastman School of Music, at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland, and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He collaborated for many years with lyricist Lee Adams. Their Broadway musicals include Bye Bye Birdie (1960) and Applause (1970). Strouse composed the score for the film Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and wrote the music for Annie (1977), with lyrics by Martin Charnin. He also composed the theme song “Those Were the Days” for the television series All in the Family (1971–79).
Strouse received three Tony Awards. He was married to choreographer Barbara Siman from 1962 until her death in 2023; they had four children.
