Biography
Charles Moss Duke Jr. is an American former astronaut, United States Air Force officer and test pilot. Born on 3 October 1935 in Charlotte, North Carolina, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1957 and earned a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1966.
Duke served as capsule communicator (CAPCOM) for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. In 1972 he was lunar module pilot on Apollo 16, becoming the tenth person and the youngest, at age 36, to walk on the Moon. He logged 265 hours in space and over 20 hours of extravehicular activity.
He has appeared in archive footage and as himself in documentaries and films, including Apollo 11 (2019), In the Shadow of the Moon (2007) and Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo (2017).
