Biography
Checco Varese is a Peruvian cinematographer. Born in Lima, he began his career in the mid-1980s shooting news coverage and documentaries in conflict zones across Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa before transitioning to music videos, commercials and narrative work.
He has served as director of photography on feature films including It Chapter Two (2019), The 33 (2015), Replicas (2018) and Miracles from Heaven (2016), and on series such as The Strain (2014), Colony (2016) and Daisy Jones & The Six (2023). Varese won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work on the Hulu miniseries Dopesick (2021).
A member of the American Society of Cinematographers, Varese is married to director Patricia Riggen.
