Cho Yeo-jeong gives the wealthy housewife in Parasite a persuasive, unexamined sense of entitlement. We rate the performance for its humour and restraint, and would welcome more parts that ask as much of her.

Cho Yeo-jeong’s Yeon-kyo expects things to be arranged for her, and sees little reason to ask how they get done. In Parasite (2019), Cho makes that wealthy housewife’s obliviousness funny while allowing us to see how thoroughly she depends on being indulged. There is no need to play her as a monster. We laughed, then felt uneasy, because Cho makes her expectation that others will accommodate her seem so ordinary.
The Servant (2010), an erotic reworking of a folktale, brought her attention after years in smaller film and television parts. The Concubine (2012) continued the explicit period roles and reinforced a tendency to cast her in erotic films. Her supporting performance in Obsessed (2014) drew Bong Joon Ho’s attention. Parasite then became her international breakthrough, giving audiences a different introduction to her work: comedy built around a woman who has little reason to examine her own good fortune.
Alongside Lee Sun-kyun as Park Dong-ik, she helps make the wealthy household credible enough for Bong’s family con to work. Their performances show how easily people can get used to having their needs met, and neither insists that we despise them. Bong allows both families to make mistakes but is clear about which can afford them. Cho’s performance helps us understand that difference without having to underline it herself. The writing and music occasionally labour a point; her performance does not need the assistance.
The risk in calling this her defining role is that it replaces one narrow expectation with another. Hidden Face (2024), a psychological thriller, reunites her with director Kim Dae-woo and gives her another film lead. A change of genre alone tells us little about the quality of a performance, though, and Parasite remains the firmest basis for our enthusiasm. Start there, and watch how little Cho needs to do to make Yeon-kyo’s assumptions clear.
Biography
Cho Yeo-jeong is a South Korean actress. She was born on 10 February 1981 in Seoul and began her career as a model in 1997 before making her acting debut in 1999. She trained at Dongguk University.
She first gained prominence with leading roles in the period films The Servant (2010) and The Concubine (2012). Internationally she is best known for playing Yeon-kyo in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019). Her other notable film credits include The Target (2014), Obsessed (2014) and Hidden Face (2024). She has also appeared in numerous television series, among them I Need Romance (2011), Lovers of Haeundae (2012), Divorce Lawyer in Love (2015) and Cheat on Me If You Can (2020–2021).
In 2026 she starred as Lee Ye-ji in the film Possible Love.
