Biography
Chris Eyre is an American film and television director and producer. An enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, he was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1968 and raised by adoptive parents in Klamath Falls. He studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned an MFA in filmmaking.
Eyre gained national attention with his debut feature Smoke Signals (1998), the first widely distributed film written, directed and co-produced by Native Americans. He has since directed episodes of series including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Friday Night Lights (2008–2011) and Dark Winds (2022–), as well as films such as Skins (2002) and Edge of America (2003). He has also worked on PBS projects including We Shall Remain and documentaries.
