Biography

Christopher Casson (1912–1996) was an English-born actor who worked extensively in Ireland. The son of actors Dame Sybil Thorndike and Sir Lewis Casson, he made his stage debut as a child and trained at the Central School of Dramatic Art. He joined the Gate Theatre company in Dublin in 1938 and became an Irish citizen in 1946.

Casson appeared in numerous stage, radio, television and film roles. He gained national recognition for playing Canon Browne in the RTÉ series The Riordans. His film credits include Zardoz (1974) as the Old Scientist and Educating Rita (1983) as the Professor. Other films include Captain Lightfoot (1955), Shake Hands with the Devil (1959) and Frankie Starlight (1995). He was married to Irish stage designer Kay O'Connell.
