Biography
Claude-Michel Schönberg is a French composer, songwriter and record producer, best known for his musical theatre collaborations with lyricist Alain Boublil.
Born in Vannes in 1944, he began his career as a singer and record producer. He wrote the music for the 1973 rock opera La Révolution Française and achieved a French number-one hit with 'Le Premier Pas' in 1974. In 1980 he and Boublil created the stage musical Les Misérables, which opened in London in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987, winning eight Tony Awards including Best Original Score.
Schönberg composed the score for the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song ('Suddenly'). His other major works with Boublil include Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996), The Pirate Queen (2006) and Marguerite (2008).
