Biography
Claude Piéplu (also credited as Claude Pieplu) was a French actor of theatre, film and television. Born in Paris, he trained with Maurice Escande and made his stage debut in 1944 at the Théâtre des Mathurins alongside Gérard Philipe and Maria Casarès. He appeared in over a hundred productions and was known for his distinctive hoarse voice.
Piéplu is remembered for his role as the Colonel in Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). Other notable film appearances include Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez (1964), Hibernatus (1969), The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob (1973), The Tenant (1976) and Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar (1999) as Panoramix. He was the narrator of the animated series Les Shadoks and received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
