Biography
Compay Segundo, born Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz, was a Cuban singer, guitarist and composer. He appeared as himself in the 1999 documentary film Buena Vista Social Club, directed by Wim Wenders.
Born in Siboney, Cuba, on 18 November 1907, he began performing in the 1920s and became known in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the duo Los Compadres. He invented the armónico, a seven-string instrument, and composed the song 'Chan Chan'. He gained international recognition in the late 1990s through the Buena Vista Social Club album and film. He died in Havana on 13 July 2003.
