Biography
Country Joe McDonald was an American singer, songwriter and musician who appeared as himself with his band Country Joe and the Fish in the concert film Woodstock (1970). He was also credited in More American Graffiti (1979) and performed in other films including Zachariah (1971) and Gas-s-s-s (1970).
Born Joseph Allen McDonald on 1 January 1942 in Washington, DC, he co-founded the psychedelic folk-rock group Country Joe and the Fish in the mid-1960s. The band featured at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969. McDonald later worked as a solo artist, composer and occasional actor, with additional credits including the television series Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City (1993). He died on 7 March 2026 in Berkeley, California.
