Somewhere in every season of Cobra Kai a grown man explains, with complete seriousness, why a karate tournament for teenagers matters, and Courtney Henggeler is standing slightly to one side with a look that asks whether he can hear himself. That is the part. Amanda LaRusso is Daniel's wife and business partner, and across six seasons she is the one adult in the Valley who can see how ridiculous all of this is. The writers give her the driest lines, and she lands them without leaning on them, which is the harder trick. Ralph Macchio's Daniel is no longer sure he is the hero; Amanda has known for years, and married him anyway.
Nothing before it suggested she would be handed a part that lasted. She began with a lead in a small horror film, The Bog Creatures (2003), and then spent the best part of two decades in the guest-spot economy: House (2005), NCIS, Criminal Minds, Bones, a recurring turn as Claudia on Mom, a flight attendant in Friends with Benefits (2011). She played Sheldon Cooper's twin sister Missy on The Big Bang Theory twice, in 2008 and 2018, a gap about as long as most acting careers. She had nearly quit when Cobra Kai came along in 2018. Later there was a period part in George Clooney's The Boys in the Boat (2023).
What she does well is the reaction. The series runs on escalation, on adults taking offence at things that happened in The Karate Kid, and it needs someone in the frame whose face registers all this as absurd, or the whole thing tips into the earnestness it is mocking. Henggeler does it with timing rather than mugging: a pause, a flat delivery, an exit. We laughed at Amanda more reliably than at anyone in the show except Johnny Lawrence himself, and by the middle seasons we caught ourselves waiting for her to walk in, because nobody else was going to say the obvious thing out loud. That is a real skill and a narrow one, and the show asked for nothing wider. When the series began repeating itself, so did the job, and there is a limit to how many scenes a raised eyebrow can carry.
The honest verdict is that we do not know how much more there was, because nobody asked. Twenty years of one-episode parts and one long run as the sensible person do not tell you whether an actor could hold the centre of a drama. In March 2025, after the finale, she announced she was retiring, and put it plainly: "I no longer wanted to be a cog in the wheel of the machine." Actors do not often leave at the moment they are most visible. We would have liked to see her given something with no karate in it, but the person best placed to decide that has decided.
Biography
Courtney Henggeler is an American actress. She is known for playing Amanda LaRusso in the television series Cobra Kai (2018–2025). She also appeared as Missy Cooper in The Big Bang Theory (2007).
Henggeler was born on 11 December 1978 in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. She grew up partly in Pennsylvania before moving to Seaford, New York, and later studied briefly at SUNY Fredonia before moving to Los Angeles for acting training. Her other television credits include guest roles in House, Mom and Bones. In 2025 she announced her retirement from acting after more than twenty years in the profession.
