Biography

Dalpalan, born Kang Ki-young on 16 July 1966 in Seoul, South Korea, is a film score composer and music director. He began his career as a first-generation Korean heavy metal and electronic musician, playing in bands including Sinawe, H2O and Pipi Band. He started composing for film in 1997 with Bad Movie and made his full debut as music director with Lies (1999).

In 2002, Dalpalan co-founded the film music group Pitch Present with Jang Young-gyu, Bang Jun-seok and Lee Byeong-hoon. He has frequently collaborated with Jang Young-gyu on scores including A Bittersweet Life (2005), The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) and The Wailing (2016). His other notable film work includes The Yellow Sea (2010), The Call (2020), 20th Century Girl (2022) and Unlocked (2023). He has also composed for television series such as Kingdom (2019) and its follow-ups.

Dalpalan has received several awards for his film scores, including Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Music on The Wailing (2016) and Believer (2018).
