Daniel Auteuil can be broadly comic, but we value him most when he gives little away. In Caché, his frightened, defensive Georges Laurent earns our sympathy without making his account of himself convincing.

In Caché (2005), Daniel Auteuil’s Georges Laurent receives surveillance recordings of his Paris home. Auteuil makes the alarm reasonable: somebody has been looking closely at a life Georges thought was private. He does not enlarge the distress for our benefit, and he does not make Georges’s account of himself easy to accept. We can follow the frightened man’s reasoning up to the point where he starts deciding how little responsibility he needs to take.
He arrived at this restraint by way of comedy, gaining notice in Les Sous-doués (1980) before Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources (both 1986) established him in dramatic roles. The stooped Ugolin of Jean de Florette makes the physical change plain. With Claude Sautet, notably in Un cœur en hiver (1992), the work became more introverted, built from small gestures and silences. He continued to make popular comedies alongside thrillers and auteur films.
That ability to keep fear and defensiveness visible together makes him particularly valuable to Michael Haneke. We were unsettled by Caché because Auteuil made us care about Georges’s distress even as we disliked his evasions. Juliette Binoche’s Anne is essential to this: her own unease makes the couple credible, rather than leaving Auteuil to supply all the feeling. Neither actor prettifies the strain, but neither pushes it into exaggeration. Their work gives us a reason to worry about the intrusion beyond wanting to know who is responsible.
Haneke can press too hard to direct our judgement, and that is our reservation about the film. Auteuil and Binoche help by keeping Georges and Anne from becoming merely prosperous people awaiting punishment. For another way into Auteuil, go back to Jean de Florette and the stooped Ugolin: the physical work deserves attention alongside the silences. Start with Caché if restraint appeals, but do not expect him to make liking Georges easy.
Biography
Daniel Auteuil is a French actor and director. He was born on 24 January 1950 in Algiers, then part of French Algeria.
He began his career in theatre and musical comedy before making his film debut in the 1970s. His performance as Ugolin in Jean de Florette (1986) and its sequel Manon des Sources (1986) brought him wider recognition; he received a César Award for Best Actor for the roles.
Auteuil is known for films including Caché (2005), in which he played Georges Laurent, The Closet (2001), 36th Precinct (2004) and La Belle Époque (2019). He has won two César Awards for Best Actor and a BAFTA Award, and shared the Best Actor prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
