Biography
Daniel Toscan du Plantier was a French film producer. Born in Chambéry in 1941, he studied at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris before working in advertising and the press, including at France Soir.
From 1975 to 1985 he served as director-general of Gaumont, where he oversaw production of numerous auteur films. He later headed Erato Films and, from 1988 until his death, was president of Unifrance, the organisation promoting French cinema abroad. He also presided over the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, which awards the César prizes.
Among the films he produced or co-produced are Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Fanny and Alexander (1982), L'Argent (1983), Nostalghia (1983), À nos amours (1983) and Under the Sun of Satan (1987). He died in Berlin in 2003 while attending the Berlinale.
