Biography
Danylo Antonovych (also credited as Daniil Antonovich or D. Antonovich; real name Budko) was a Ukrainian actor. He was born on 22 December 1889 in Bilopillia and died on 8 February 1975 in Kharkiv. He graduated from the Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in Kyiv.
He joined the Shevchenko First Theatre of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic in 1919 and worked with Les Kurbas in the Kyiv Drama Theatre (Kyidramte) from 1920. From 1922 he was associated with the Berezil Theatre, working in Moscow between 1923 and 1926 before returning to Kharkiv, where he remained with Berezil (later the Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after Taras Shevchenko) from 1926. He later lectured at the Kharkiv Theatre Institute, becoming a professor in 1957.
Antonovych appeared in Sergei Eisenstein's films Strike (1925) as a worker (uncredited) and Battleship Potemkin (1925) as a sailor. Other film roles include Maksym Zalizniak in Koliyivshchyna (1933). He received the Stalin Prize in 1948 and was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1954.
